New NAB Chief Smith Meets With Genachowski

October 29, 2009: NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith officially began work at the agency just a few days ago, and on October 28 he met with with FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, Media Bureau Chief William Lake, and Legal Advisor Sherrese Smith.

NAB Joint Board Chair and Commonwealth Broadcasting President/CEO Steve Newberry and EVP Jane Mago also attended the meeting, at which, the NAB said in an ex parte filing with the FCC, "differing views on the subject of broadcast ownership" were discussed.

Smith, the NAB reports, "expressed his view that the FCC's ownership rules should enable broadcasters to hold reasonable combinations of media properties so that they can continue to provide programming to meet the needs of the communities they serve."

Smith also, the filing says, "expressed the view that the best way to have greater diversity of ownership was to improve access to capital." It continued, "In this regard, he explained that a return of the use of tax incentives as a way to attract capital was important and that NAB and the FCC should urge that such programs be adopted."
