Jury Awards $16.6 Million In 'Wii' Contest Lawsuit

October 29, 2009: A jury in Sacramento Superior Court has awarded the family of Jennifer Strange $16.6 million, the Sacramento Bee reports. Strange, a 28-year-old married mother of three, died in 2007 of water intoxication after participating in a contest at Entercom's KDND/Sacramento.

Strange's family -- her husband and the father of two of her children, and another son and his father -- sued Entercom Communications of Philadelphia and subsidiary Entercom Sacramento, and the paper reports that the jury found the entities were negligent in conducting the contest, which involved contestants drinking as much water as possible without using the bathroom. The jury assigned all the blame to Entercom Sacramento, exonerating the parent company. Ten KDND employees were fired after Strange's death was reported.

The plaintiffs' lawyers had sought $34 million-$44.3 million in damages. Entercom's lawyers said Strange's death could not have been foreseen, and that any liability had to be offset by her own "contributory negligence."
