CBS Radio Tops Webcast Ratings; Ando Reworks Metrics

November 6, 2009: Ando Media's monthly Internet Audio Top 20 puts CBS Radio in first place, as Ando changes to new measurement metrics.

In the Monday-Sunday, 6 a.m.-midnight numbers, CBS Radio saw 175,261 average active sessions (AAS) -- that is, the average number of streams of one minute or more active within that time period. Session starts, or the number of streams of one minute or more started within a time period, came in at 75.4 million. CBS Radio's average time spent listening in September, representing the average number of hours for each session lasting more than one minute, was one hour and 29 minutes.

Pandora, new to the Ando rankings, came in second in September, with AAS of 150,111, session starts at 82.6 million, and ATSL of 1:13. 977Music.com Corporate was third in AAS, with 40,095, with the other data not available. Citadel Broadcasting garnered AAS of 24,994, 4.2 million session starts, and ATSL of 3:33 for the month, while 1.fm Corporate showed AAS of 21,196 and came in fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 in September were Digitally Imported, Entercom's streams, ESPN Radio Corporate, Cox Radio, and Kurt Hanson's AccuRadio channels.

"The changes were made in response to requests from both the publisher and the agency community for measurement standards in keeping with other digital best practices," Ando CEO Robert Maccini said. "Terrestrial radio AQH and cume measurements are not the best metrics for measuring today's audience delivered via a digital channel and do not accurately pertain to online audio.

Ando is working to get Media Rating Council accreditation for its ratings, and believes the new one-minute minimum is more in keeping with MRC standards.

Additionally, Ando is now breaking out domestic streams in its ratings. The leaders for September, Monday-Sunday, 6 a.m.-midnight were, in order, CBS Radio, Pandora, Clear Channel Radio Digital, Citadel Broadcasting, Entercom, ESPN Radio, Cox Radio, Radio One's Interactive One, EMF, and Greater Media.
