Tate Saluted By Fellow Commissioners

WASHINGTON -- December 30, 2008: FCC Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate is being saluted by her fellow commissioners as she prepares to leave the agency. Tate was appointed to the commission and confirmed by the Senate in 2005, and reappointed to a full term in 2007.

Fellow Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell said of Tate, "Her time here has been eventful, and she should be proud of her efforts to lift unnecessary regulations in order to allow market competition to grow and flourish."

McDowell continued, "Debi also has brought her tremendous energy to bear on issues affecting families and children. No other commissioner in the history of this agency can be said to have done more to call attention to the actions that the government, industry, and private citizens can take to help
parents and children negotiate our evolving telecommunications landscape."

He also gave Tate credit for being the "voice of consensus" at the FCC, saying she helped the commission' find the middle ground on any number of complicated issues."

Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said, "It's been a pleasure to serve alongside Debi Tate for the past three years. We have all benefited from Debi's collegiality and dedication."

Adelstein also pointed to Tate's "advocacy on behalf of American children and families," saying it was "truly commendable and should serve as an example to everyone."

Commissioner Michael Copps said, "Commissioner Tate is justly known for the work she does on behalf of children and families, fighting for a media environment that appeals to the better angels of our nature."

He also cited Tate's invovement in universal service, saying, "As Chairwoman of the Joint Board, she worked hard to craft recommendations to broadent the objectives and enhance the operations of the Universal Service Fund. he Joint Board had been considering these issues for years, but it was under her leadership that recommendations were actually produced and presented to the FCC."

Tate said of her fellow commissioners, "I could not have served with four more dedicated, professional, and compassionate individuals. They epitomize all that is good and positive about the term 'public servant.' To Chairman [Kevin] Martin, Commissioner Copps, Commissioner Adelstein and Commissioner McDowell: I thank each of you for so many gifts to me professionally and personally. Gifts of your time, your wisdom, your insights and especially our ability to disagree on principle without being disagreeable."
