Album Sales Plummet In '08, Download Sales Rise

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- January 2, 2008: Overall music transactions rose by 10.5 percent in 2008, Nielsen SoundScan reports, to 1.5 billion, a record high. But much of that gain was in lower-value transactions; overall album sales, including track equivalents, were off by 8.5 percent, to 534.4 million.

Digital music sales surged in 2008, to 1.07 billion, up 27 percent, while digital album sales rose by 32 percent for the year, to 65.8 million. And the music business saw a nice holiday surge, with a record-breaking 65 million transactions in the last week of 2008.

Digital sales now account for 32 percent of music purchases, a figure that will likely continue to rise.
