The FCC's Media Bureau has adopted an order letting FM stations increase power for HD Radio digital signals up to 10 percent of analog power. Most stations will be allowed to increase power by 6 dB -- a fourfold increase -- immediately, and an application procedure is being set for upgrades to 10 dB. NAB EVP Dennis Wharton said, "Today's ruling will result in greatly improved indoor reception for HD Radio listeners and greater service reliability for portable HD Radio devices."

A new survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 76 percent of 8-18-year-olds own an iPod or other MP3 player, up from 18 percent in 2004. In a speech Thursday to the Practicing Law Institute in DC, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps said "bad choices" had been made in traditional media, including consolidation and heavy debt loads, and by the FCC, with what Copps called a "massive frontal assault" on public interest protections. He'd like to see stations demonstrate their news and information initiatives during license renewal. "Not," he said, "in a burdensome way but in a credible way."
